Sew Grateful for Silk

Hello everyone!  Debi at My Happy Sewing Place is hosting Sew Grateful Week - and today (Monday) is giveaway day.  I've been wanting to do a giveaway on my blog for quite some time - and what better time than Sew Grateful Week?  I think you are going to like this giveaway, because I am sharing something that many of you have expressed difficulty finding at affordable prices - silk!

Oh yes, you read right.  One lucky follower of either Debi's blog or my blog will win their choice of 1.5 yards of silk.  I will ship internationally, so it is open to anyone.

I have selected three silks from my stash in which I purposely bought in excess so I could give it away. These are all lining fabrics, but would also work great for some lingerie sewing (french knickers, tap pants, slips . . .)

The first choice you have is a pastel, mint green.  The  color in this photo is pretty close to actual.  Like most of the silks I purchase, this one was simply labeled 100% silk - with no further description.  I believe it is Silk Habotai.  It's very light weight and has a slippery feel (though not like charmeuse)

Your second option is another green (I love the color green).  This one is more aqua marine, and is a bit lighter than it is coming across in the photo.  Again, only labeled 100% silk, so I can't say for sure what kind of silk it is, but it's one of my favorite lining fabrics.  I have used this type of silk to line this dress and this skirt.  It feels a bit like a cotton lawn, but better.  It pairs really well with wool and rayon as the main fabrics when used as a lining.

Your third option is a patterned silk.  This would be such a great print to line a pencil skirt with - that's what I'm hoping to do with the half that I keep for myself.  I've got a deep red wool that I got from a friend and I think it will be just perfect.  This fabric feels like a silk crepe to me, I'm not able to say for sure.

So, how can you enter?  It is so simple.  Just leave a comment telling me which of the three silks you want to win and what you most likely would use it for.

**UPDATE**  Newbie alert!  As this is my first giveaway, I forgot to include a deadline.  I'm updating this post to say that the time to enter this giveaway will close at midnight on Sunday, February 10th.  Please get your entry in before that time to be included.

Live in this moment and love life!

  3. Ooo., It's a tricky decision.. they're all lovely! I'm looking for a lining to go under a tweed waist coat I'm planning so the stripe would be lovely, as would the aqua.. either would be a joy to win. thanks for the chance!

  4. I would love to try lining a jacket with the patterned silk, pulling out some of the colours in the jacket. Though, the aqua silk would make a splashing pop of colour under a skirt...either would be special to win! Thanks...J

  7. I would love the aqua, what a nice giveaway! I'm in the middle of my first fully lined dress, so I would love some lux lining fabric for my next dress! But the color is so pretty I'd want it on the outside!

  8. Amazing! I love the top one - green is a definite favourite of mine too :-D I'd use it for lining something I'm sure - since I'm pretty obsessed with 40's suits at the moment, that's probably where it would go. :-D

  13. I love both greens! I like the idea of using them for lingerie, but they would definitely be great for linings too! Perhaps for a spring jacket? :)

  18. I'm loving the aquamarine silk. I'd use it for a 1940s style bra, with some handmade vintage lace, and probably a matching pair of panties. It's a project that I have been eyeing some silk for, but I have put off buying any because I've been really uninspired by the colour selection (black, white, tan).

  22. I love the mint green. It would be hard to decide on what to use it on, since I have a few projects coming up that it would be great lining for, but I would love to use it for some nice silky under things

  29. Oh my goodness the aquamarine is lovely looking. I'd probably make it into a blouse since I own no such thing as a silk blouse.

  30. I love the darker green silk! I'm not totally sure what I would use for it, but I'm thinking right now it would be to line a jacket.

  31. Ohh, either of the greens would be lovely, but if I have to choose I'd just prefer the lighter one. It would make a beautiful cami / tap pants combo!

Thank you for your generous giveaway! xox

  32. Oooh I love the pastel mint green. And I don't normally go for light colours. I've been wanting to try out tap pants.

  33. Oh, they're all gorgeous! I'd choose the patterned silk, I love patterns. :-) (Although that dark green is also amazingly stunning....)

I'm planning on making a vintage 1940's suit pattern this year, so I'd try lining the jacket and/or skirt with it.

  34. I'd go for the aquamarine--it looks pretty green in the photos, so I might be able to use it for the green bits of my wedding stuff if the dye job I need to do doesn't work out! Otherwise, I'd probably use it to line some drab, dark colored thing, because that's how I roll.

  35. Any one of those would be marvelous. I love the feeling of a decadent lining next to my skin.
I really like the pencil skirt. Being a pear myself, I can sympathize with the difficulty in making such a pattern fit. I should make my own pattern too.

  36. I love that patterned silk! Gorgeous. to be honest, i have never sewn with silks (or anything thin and slippery yet, only wovens and knits), so I would be only too pleased if I was able to make a flowy summer dress. Would have to check the yardage against a pattern though. I am hosting a giveaway on my blog as well, if you are interested.

  38. I love the aquamarine silk, such a gorgeous rich colour. I would love to make a slip with it or possibly line a jacket that I haven't yet got around to making!!

  39. I have a beautiful hunter green wool flannel that i want to make into a riding style jacket and the mint green silk would make a really nice lining for it, I think. Thanks for hosting a giveaway! No blog to link to, so my email is ruthanne-edward@rogers.com

  40. I am really liking the aquamarine silk in the middle. Not sure what I'd use it for at the moment... probably line a skirt or dress... maybe tackle a slip? Thanks!

  41. What a generous giveaway!! I really like the first silk; it reminds me of something a mermaid might wear, which means I'd probably use it for something lingerie-like ^_^

  42. These are beautiful! If I were to win, I think I would choose the last one. I'm working on my first tailored wool jacket in chocolate brown with camel colored accents on the collar and facings, and I think this silk might just go perfectly with it.

  43. Thank you for the wonderful giveaway! I will pick the last one. Maybe a blouse.
    Cheers!!

  44. Wow - what a mouth watering giveaway! Can you please include me? The first, mint green silk is my fave. I would make either a top or a slip I think...
    Thanks, Gabrielle (UpSewLate)
